The Merrie Monarch Festival, held each year in Hilo, is Hawai’i’s largest hula event. Tickets to see the competition sell out months in advance, BUT, during the week of Merrie Monarch, there are cultural craft fairs, hula demonstrations, and a parade. So, we were excited to take our viewers to see the parade and some of the craft fair fun.
On the parade route, we found the Two Ladies Kitchen, where we bought their famous mochi confections and found out how popular that store is!
After the parade, we had lunch at Pond’s near Banyan Drive and checked out some shopping near there, went to the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium to see one of the larger craft fairs, then picked up a one pound Lau Lau at the Kuhio Grille. After that we drove over to the Prince Kuhio Mall to check out the pop ups in the mall to include the bigger Hawaii clothing designers.
If you are here in April, I would suggest you check out the festivities and if you can swing tickets, it’s a dream come true for people who love Hula.
