We had the underground adventure of a lifetime when we explored the Kaumana Caves in Hilo!

When we descended the staircase in the caves, we went left into the tube you see in the video. MANY visitors go right and the tube entrance is larger, so there is more light as you go deeper into the tube. The one we went into, we had a light wand to help us with video, which was great, because it was pitch black very soon after we started exploring! The best part of the journey was following the ancient river of lava for over 1/4 mile.

Kaumana Cave is actually a skylight in a 25-mile long lava tube that was created by an 1881 flow from Mauna Loa. History reports that the 1881 flow stopped within 1 1/2 miles of Hilo due to the intervention of Princess Ruth. Click to learn more:

Know Before You Go
Entrance is free! Signage is minimal when you get to the caves. From downtown Hilo, take Kaumana Drive inland. There is a small parking area across the street. Dress appropriately: wear closed toed shoes, bring a jacket and consider longer pants as its cooler in the caves.
