Our friends, Eric & Julie, over at 365 Hawaii have another great video for you…

Mauna Loa volcano erupted last night for the first time since April 1984. We got up at 6:30 am to learn that lava had left the summit caldera and was oozing down the North Eastern flank visible from the restroom area on Saddle Road. We had to go!

As we approached, we could see the orange/rusty hue of the smoke from the lava burning on Mauna Loa and could see a line of white smoke near the edge and as we got closer, we could detect the glowing embers of a very slow lava flow. (This is going to be a pretty cool sight at night!)

We pulled over off of the Saddle Road/Daniel K. Inouye Highway and walked out onto the 1984 lava flow to capture video of the eruption. The lava is as freshly black 40 years later as it is near the 2018 flow in East Hawaii. Seeing new earth being born is certainly amazing!

No evacuations are going on at this time on the island.
